One day
in 1990, a prominent CEO walked into David Lapin's (CEO of SBE) office with
an unconventional hypothesis. "Nearly all business problems
are fundamentally ethical: identify the ethic, fix it, and business
should flourish."
The project took a year and a half and covered some 20,000 employees from
more than 10 different cultures, at all management levels. The results,
subsequently validated internationally, were astonishing and opened a host
of opportunities to use ethics to impact on performance.
Years of research - studying businesses around the world, not just South African
businesses - deepened this insight, leading David Lapin to found this company,
Strategic Business Ethics, Inc. SBE helps organizations meet the challenges
of an ever-changing world by centering their cultures in never-changing principles.
As SBE's record over the last 15 years proves, these principles inspire
trust, deliver performance, and, yes, drive revenue growth.
The main finding of our research was an important paradox: while
cultural diversity can enrich a work environment, ethical diversity wreaks
havoc on performance. Ethical integrity needed to become a strategic
imperative. Ethics is a leadership tool to yield superior financial
performance.
